Demolition work under way inside the Mercat de l’AbaceriaWork to demolish the market stalls inside the Mercat de l’Abaceria has been under way since the middle of January to leave the site ready for the new market to be built, as from the first quarter of 2020. After the stalls, the roof will be removed and the upper sections of the structure dismantled, along with ceilings, walls and all paving. The process to dismantle the market should be completed in the summer.
Throughout the process to completely overhaul the market, special care will be taken to achieve a sustainable and efficient building. The only part to be preserved will be the metal structure, which is listed heritage. The demolition of the interior responds to demands from local residents and retailers so that the site is kept clear until work on the definitive project starts.
The new market will have 3,595 square metres of floor space distributed into four floors. The ground floor will be used for commerce and the mezzanine floor for services and multi-purpose rooms for local entities. The two floors below ground will provide 52 parking spaces and a storage area.
The current range of commerce will also be complemented by a new space for the cooperative economy and a supermarket. The revamp emphasises the market as the most important facility in the area in terms of fresh produce, and as a traditional backbone for social cohesion.
The new Mercat de l’Abaceria will include:
- 43 food establishments inside
- 13 non-food establishments outside
- a new commercial area for producer cooperatives
- a new supermarket (750 m2),
- multi-purpose areas for cultural, ludic and social uses and associations
- a multi-purpose room for workshops: healthy food, cooking etc.
- 52 parking spaces
Stallholders at the Gràcia market have been operating since July in a temporary structure located in Passeig de Sant Joan, between C/ Indústria and C/ Sant Antoni Maria Claret.
