The project has now been presented to traders at the market and will soon be outlined to local people in the neighbourhoods of Baix Guinardó (Horta-Guinardó) and El Camp d’en Grassot i Gràcia Nova (Gràcia).

The canopy for the provisional market will be set up at the pond, which is to be drained, while the most suitable technical solution is studied to locate the facility here.

The location will mean the park retains its usual function and purpose as the central esplanade will remain clear, with less of an impact for greenery and the sports and games area maintained.

At the same time, the market will be able to continue with its commercial activity and will have a space with good access from the street, also facilitating loading and unloading.

The provision is for stallholders to be able to move to the provisional market in July 2024, with the renovation of the current market at C/ Pi i Margall, 73-75, to begin just after that.

Listening to the voice of local people

The provisional market was initially planned for the central section of the gardens but later ruled out when a municipal report concluded this would affect greenery and spatial uses. The decision also took into account demands from local residents.

Building with structural pathologies

The building currently housing the Mercat de l’Estrella has a series of structural deficiencies which do not represent an immediate risk but mean that renovation work is required once the stallholders move to the temporary facility. The situation will be monitored in the meantime.

Integrating the pond into the park

With the market temporarily shifting to the site of the pond, the municipal government is making a commitment to draft a comprehensive renovation project for the Jardins del Baix Guinardó and make the pond part of the park, with green areas to play in. Once the Mercat de l’Estrella returns to its definitive location, the goal is to renovate the gardens in line with the demands of local people.
