A varied programme

The new academic year sees the municipal music schools offering long-term programmes for thirty different instruments. Besides these programmes, centres offer entirely complementary activities and training courses of different durations, aimed at various types of people. These include music workshops for babies, music and movement, choir singing and activities outside of school hours. The number of places available for the 2022-2023 school year is 815 (55 more than last year).

At the Conservatori, this year’s professional degree courses in different disciplines have a combined total of 523 students, 31 of them pursuing dual specialisms and 386 returning students.

The facilities at the Conservatori have been improved, for instance with new furniture in the reception and the staff room, plus IT equipment for classrooms.

Integration as a goal

Courses at municipal music schools are designed to facilitate access to music practice for students of all ages, respecting everybody’s right to it and responding to the social and educational value of music and its influence on school success.

Because of this, and to ensure that the financial circumstances of families are not a barrier to accessing municipal music schools, the Barcelona Municipal Institute for Education (IMEB) has a policy of discounts of 30%, 50% and 70% off public prices for students between the ages of 4 and 18.

The number of applications approved in recent years stands at between 10% and 11% of the total number of students between the ages of 4 and 18 enrolled on long-term programmes. During the 2021-2022 academic year, Barcelona City Council allocated over 114,000 euros in this sphere.

Municipal music schools also promote support and guidance for music awareness projects for schools at a community level, linked to cultural facilities such as community centres, neighbourhood social centres and other organisations and associations in the community.
