The Grec holds its ground and successfully rounds off a very special edition

Despite the adversity, the exceptional situation and the difficulties for enjoying culture in times of the pandemic, the 44th edition of the Grec Festival concluded with a positive balance in terms of the sensations among artists and audiences, as well as the figures for its programme and attendances.

The festival managed to maintain almost the whole of its anticipated programme (with the exception of the concert by Omara Portuondo and the film sessions sold). The Grec included 109 new artistic shows and 48 joint productions, selling 23,372 tickets out of the 25,590 available and with audiences averaging 91.3% of capacity. This figure rose to 95.2% at the Teatre Grec, where many shows sold out within hours.

This year’s programme was divided between the Grec Festival, held on-site, and the Open Grec, allowing the festival to be extended beyond the theatre season, from September to June, and for some shows for the 2021 season to be programmed. For the moment on the first section has concluded, with part of the content for the Open Grec still available in August and the Grec to Grec to return in September with 25 new shows.

The huge efforts made to adapt the Grec have managed to keep it alive. The festival served as a testing bed for new safety protocols to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. It has helped demonstrate that culture is safe and that with suitable preventive measures and everybody’s collaboration, stage productions can continue to operate in the autumn.

In addition, the fact that this was one of the few large European festivals to keep its programme enabled the Grec Festival to gain prominence in cultural circles in Europe and Latin America. A good example of this is how the Grec Pro broke records and brought together over 400 professionals.
