The Republican Spring 2021 reaches all ten city districts

Barcelona is set for its now-traditional Republican Spring, which this year marks the 90th anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic. The years of the Republic represented a series of important social and political changes for the Spanish state. Education, housing, healthcare, gender equality, culture and sport are just some of the facets of today’s democracy inherited from those years. Because of this, the slogan for the Republican Spring 2021 is “The public revolution”.

Ten events for ten districts

The commemorative mapping display on the façade of the City Hall will first be aired on 14 April, on the Betevé progamme Àrtic. From then on it can be viewed on the wesbite and on the City Council’s social media. Given the health restrictions, and to avoid crowds, the display is not open to spectators. Espurnes de la ciutat has been created by Alba G. Corral, with music by Bàrbara Granados. It includes documentation and music from the Second Republic.

The Republican Spring will reach all city districts. On Wednesday 14 April, the date of the proclamation of the Second Republic, ten memory spaces in the ten districts will offer a music and dance experience by music schools, in an artistic project by Bàrbara Granados with choreography from Brodas Bros. The locations chosen for each district are:

  • Ciutat Vella: Dispensari Central Antituberculós
  • L’Eixample: Pl.Cinc d’Oros
  • Sants-Montjuïc: Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc
  • Les Corts: Presó de dones
  • Sarrià – Sant Gervasi: Mútua Escolar Blanquerna
  • Gràcia: Plaça de les Dones del 36
  • Horta-Guinardó: Pavelló de la República
  • Nou Barris: Plaça de la República
  • Sant Andreu: Casa Bloc
  • Sant Martí: Foment Martinenc

García Lorca, a clown revolution and a concert

During the week to mark the 90th anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic, there will also be a space for music, theatre and memory. Other notable activities for the Republican Spring 2021 include: a reading of Federico García Lorca’s Doña Rosita la soltera at El Born CCM, a performance of the show Revolució de nassos, with the clowns Pepa Plana, Nöel Olivé and Lola González. Various artists will also be adding voices and music to republican values in the concert ‘Per més que feu, no passareu!’

The Republican Spring concludes with the traditional wreath laying in Plaça de la República, in Nou Barris, on 18 April.
