Data for the pre-enrolment process for the 2020-2021 school year show an increase in enrolments at publicly run schools and a preference among families for schools in their local neighbourhoods.

Enrolment for infant schooling and the first year of secondary school

In the case of pupils being enrolled for their first year at infant school (P3), a total of 11,986 places were applied for. Of these, 6,328 (53%) were in publicly run schools and 5,658 (47%) were in state-subsidised private schools, representing a seven per cent increase in the preference for public education compared to last year. In addition, 83.3% of families applied for places in schools near their homes this year.

In all, 99.62% of families obtained places at one of their chosen schools, with 93% getting their first choice.

The demand for places in the first year at secondary school grew compared to last year in both the public sphere (5,220 applications) and in state-subsidised private schools (2,079 places). The final allocation of places concluded with 97.4% of families getting one of their options and 88% getting their first choice.

Fighting school segregation

The shock plan against school segregation found that 10.87% of students are in vulnerable situations, compared to 3.7% in 2018. Pre-enrolment applications were processed for 728 vulnerable infants to start P3, with places allocated taking into account older siblings already studying at the same school, the distance of the school from home and families’ preferences.

For secondary schools, 1,381 vulnerable youngsters were pre-enrolled following criteria on older siblings at the same school, preferential allocation by schools and approval from the children’s final-year tutors at primary school.

Worth noting this year is the rebalancing of percentages between publicly run schools and state-subsidised private schools: in the case of P3 students, last year’s percentages of 63% public and 37% private became 73% and 27% respectively for the 2020-2021 school year. For students in their first year of secondary school, the distribution is 57% public and 43% private, compared to 64% and 36% respectively last year.

Summer works

The summer break will enable various projects to be carried out to transform and improve school facilities, with work to be done at over a hundred schools this year:

  • Work on 8 new schools: 1 primary school, 2 primary/secondary schools and 2 secondary schools.
  • Extensions to 21 schools, with permanent and modular spaces.
