Some 350 people take part in the Economic Education programme

Economic Education is a programme which seeks to improve the basic financial knowledge of the population, particularly families in vulnerable situations. This pioneering initiative was launched in 2018 to help people gain greater autonomy and well-being through managing their personal and family finances.

Women accounted for 76% of participants, with 35% single-parent families, also highlighting the importance of women in the family economy.

In all, the programme entailed 1,024 hours of face-to-face sessions, between training classes and individual support. Participants rated the programme very positively, giving it a score of 8.4 out of 10, with the individual support stage gaining a score of 9.1. Participants believe the economic education course has made them more confident in managing their own finances, helping them to reduce debts and generally ease their concerns about their situations etc.

Developed by the Directorate for Innovation within the Area for Social rights, Global Justice, Feminism and LGBTI, the programme won the ‘Finance for all 2020’ award, given by the Bank of Spain and the National Stock Market Commission (CNMV).

Now the challenge for the EdEc programme is to attend to nearly 1,000 beneficiaries receiving the Minimum Living Allowance (IMV) in Barcelona through an agreement with the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, and in line with the B-Mincome programme, developed by Barcelona City Council during the last term of office in collaboration with the European Union.

The EdEc website registered a record 2,400 visits in May, almost matching the total amount for the whole of 2021.
