More support and listening for city teenagers

‘Aquí t’escoltem’, the listening and support service for teenagers and young people between the ages of 12 and 20, is now operative in the Eixample district. The new point means Barcelona now has ten such spaces around the city, one in each district, while a 29% increase to the budget for the service enables it to provide more hours for individual and group support. The move provides a boost for the city’s Family and Teenage Service (SAIF), which works towards the emotional well-being of teenagers and their families.

The SAIF is made up of ‘Aquí t’escoltem’, a service which last year helped 4,700 young people (46% more than in 2019), and the Centre for Families and Teenagers, which helped 1,100 people in 2020 (91% more than in 2019).

The ‘Aqui t’escoltem’ listening service is to more than double its individual support hours from 72 to 160 a week, also adding a weekly psychological support morning in each of the districts. This means the creation of individual educational support with five hours a week, while the number of weekly hours for psychological support rises to eleven.

A new catalogue of group activities will be created, with the content to be defined according to the demands of teenagers. The service will also step up its presence in secondary schools and organisations in school hours.

The Centre for Families and Teenagers is aimed at people with parental roles with youngsters between the ages of 12 and 20. It offers information and guidance to foster self-knowledge and assist with the exercise of empathy in adolescence, to turn diversity and conflict into an opportunity for learning.

The boost to the service means an increase in the number of support hours, rising from 34 to 49 hours a week, with changes also to be made to the format for sessions to adapt to individual and family needs. Three annual group activities will also be run for parents of youngsters between the ages of 11 and 14, to promote support tools and resources for the teenage years and for parenting at this point in life.
