Subsidies for projects by young and junior researchers

Subsidies of up to 60,000 euros per project can be applied for via the e-headquarters from 1 August 2022 until 12 September 2022. Applications can be made by junior science staff, in other words those who completed their first doctoral thesis on or after 1 January 2015.

Projects must be original, for a duration of 18 months maximum; have the goal of providing scientific evidence for inspiring political decisions in the city of Barcelona; address challenges from a local, inter-disciplinary and metropolitan perspective; include gender and environmental perspectives; value the diversity of the city and more.

They must also be carried out in the city of Barcelona and/or the metropolitan area, and address specific scientific challenges, such as:

  • Health and well-being in the city
        • Population density, housing and public space.
        • Social welfare and the improvement of public services.
        • Quality of life and ageing, childhood and/or youth.
  •  Circular economy and climate action
        • Climate emergency and city.
        • Sustainable mobility of people and assets.
        • New spaces a responsable consumption and production models.
  • Community organisations, democracy and participation
        • Community and participation.

Barcelona Science Plan 2020-2023

The call is one of the projects within the framework of the Barcelona Science Plan 2020-2023, which provides for specific funding for research and improves the engagement with the science ecosystem and the city’s role as a national science and culture capital. One of the goals is to promote research subsidies for alliances with research centres and for juniors in the field of research.

This year’s process is the fifth subsidy call for research projects on city challenges to be promoted by the City Council since 2019. Since then, 29 projects are either under way or have just concluded, with 188 people taking part and an overall budget of 3.5 million euros.

With the subsides for 2022 (Research and Innovation 2022, currently in the assessment period, and Young and Junior Researchers, now being launched), the overall investment amounts to 5.5 million euros, with a potential of 53-56 projects funded.

Including these latest calls, estimates place the number of participants who will have been directly involved (to a greater or lesser degree) in the projects subsidised by Science and Universities at Barcelona City Council at some 300 people.
