This is the first green rooftop of this type in the city. Visitors will be able to discover which types of autochthonous vegetation are best suited for the city and which species grew in Barcelona before its industrialisation and the urban spread of the municipality. Part of the terrace also features solar panelling, used to help supply the museum with renewable energy.

What types of vegetation can be found on the living rooftop?

Once you access the rooftop, you’ll find an introductory display and a large garden tub with the most common plants from the Barcelona coastline, as well as sub-tropical herbs and climbing plants such as star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).

Meadows with annual plants: these are plants which germinate, flower and die every year and which survive dry hot summers as seeds. One example is the field marigold (Calendula arvensis).

Meadows with bulb plants: these survive the Mediterranean’s hot summers thanks to buds in the form of bulb, buried a few centimetres below ground. One example is saffron (Crocus sativus).

Meadow with saltwater-resistant annual plants, for instance Virginia stock (Malcomia maritima).

At the ponds you’ll find plants which are typical of humid places like lakes and riverbanks, with plants such as common water-plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica), yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea) and yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris).

More greenery to combat the climate emergency

The implementation of green rooftops is one of the measures from the Climate Plan, the Barcelona Greenery and Biodiversity Plan for 2020 and the Programme to Promote the Urban Green Infrastructure to achieve a greener, healthier, more sustainable and liveable city, improving the quality of life of its inhabitants.

The increase in green rooftops in the city complements other measures to create more greenery, also set out in the Climate Emergency Declaration, such as the promotion of green corridors, the greening up of spaces and the creation of more public parks and gardens.
