The rose garden in the Parc de Cervantes hosts this annual event from 11 to 13 May, coinciding with when roses first blossom. All of the varieties in the competition have been created by rose growers crossing existing varieties. These are brand new varieties which have never been sold commercially. Rose growers need ten years to create a new variety before being able to present it for competition and market it. Visitors to the rose garden this year were able to take part in the vote and chose rose MR-666-BR as the winner of the Citizens Rose 2018, with 403 of the votes out of a total of 6,744 votes cast during the event.
