Children in Sant Andreu get a new play area!

The new children’s play area is now open in the Parc d’Antoni Santiburcio, in the neighbourhood of Sant Andreu de Palomar. The work required an investment of nearly three million euros and means the creation of new green spaces at the former barracks known as the Casernes de Sant Andreu is practically complete.

With a surface area of 22,000 square metres, the new park containing the new children’s play area has become the largest green space in the neighbourhood of Sant Andreu de Palomar.

The new play area features games and play elements, most of them adapted, for children between 1 and 12 years old. The opening of the area corresponds to the second stage of the project for the Parc d’Antoni Santiburcio. The first stage covered an area of 6,706 square metres, creating various rest areas, an esplanade, an aromatic parterre, an area with trees, exercise areas from young people and the elderly and some ornamental springs. Bushes and carpeting plants were also planted.

The new children’s play area was built using the new criteria from the Plan for Play in Public Spaces, presented in February 2019.

More public housing

The process to transform the former Casernes de Sant Andreu continues in other parts of this site. Public housing and facilities are due to be built on the land freed up by the demolition of the former barracks. The City Council is tendering the construction of blocks C, A and J.

Block C is a building with 152 homes with services and a youth centre (for the Espai Jove Jaume Oller). Building A will have 84 homes with social rents, and block J will have 60 homes for rent by young people. The ground floor premises of this building are also to be reserved for a municipal nursery school.
