Hour of Code comes to Barcelona

The city is to host an Hour of Code event as part of the agreement between Barcelona Activa and the non-profit organisation Code.org, to help bridge the information divide relating to computer sciences. This is the biggest international education initiative in the world to stimulate young people to learn programming, even those with no previous experience of it. The activity aims to promote programming skills and concepts, opening up to everybody the possibility of learning code with free open-source content in Catalan.

The Hour of Code event will be held in Barcelona in March 2023. Participants to date include the activist Malal Yousafzai, the Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez and the former US president Barack Obama. In Barcelona, the First Deputy Mayor, Jaume Collboni, will be taking part.

Also under way is the work camp for the Observatory on Computer Sciences in Barcelona, a qualitative and quantitative study to gain a clear image of society’s knowledge in this sphere, the importance attached to it and the barriers which need to be broken down for a definitively broader learning of this fundamental skill for children and young people.

Code.org was started in the USA twenty years ago to boost STEM skills training in childhood. Over 67 million students and two million teachers currently have accounts with the platform.
