Definitive assignation of bike and moped sharing licences

Vehicle-sharing is a more sustainable and less pollutant means of mobility than the use of private vehicles. The city’s 4,176 moped-sharing licences have been awarded between a dozen operators and the 3,031 bike-sharing licences between the seven companies which completed the selection process.

Each moped-sharing company will get 348 licences and bike-sharing operators will get 433 licences for a period of three years, with the option of a further year’s extension. These companies now have 30 days to roll out their fleet of vehicles in the city.

In addition, operators can request temporary licences which were initially awarded to companies which for various reasons, such as withdrawal or a lack of documents, did not complete the process. In all there are 2,782 moped-sharing licences and 944 bike-sharing licences still vacant. The companies awarded licences are:

All operating companies must comply with the current regulations and each vehicle must display a unique identification number and be registered. Fines for non-compliance with the conditions for the use of public space will be 450,76 euros.

The requisites established by Barcelona City Council are:

  • Vehicles must be push bikes, electric bikes and electric mopeds.
  • All vehicles must include geolocalisation systems.
  • Municipal access to data on the use of the system in real time.
  • No more than 50% of the fleet can be concentrated in the city centre for a period exceeding two hours.
  • All bikes must have systems enabling them to be attached to bike parking racks in public spaces.
  • Badly parked vehicles must be removed within 24 hours.
  • A tax of 71,51 euros must be paid per vehicle per year.
  • Companies must have civil liability insurance for their vehicles.
  • Licences issued may not be transferred or lent to others.
  • A deposit of 10% of the total amount of tax payable for a company’s fleet is needed to guarantee that licence issue conditions are suitably met.
  • All mopeds must be parked according to municipal regulations set out in the by-law on the circulation of pedestrians and vehicles.
