Liceu metro station regains its historical pinnacles
As the Barcelona metro system marks it centenary, these iconic columns have been installed again by the entrance points, as well as replicas of the two original signs, indicating the entrances to the station with the names ‘Liceu’ and ‘Gran Metro’.
The restauration work has allowed the pinnacles to be regained, made with ironwork connected with bolts, which has been sand-blasted and given a laser cleaning treatment.
The Liceu station was inaugurated on 5 July 1925, with two different signs. The entrance in the direction of Lesseps indicated ‘Liceu’, while the other entrance (with no direction as this was the end of the line), indicated ‘Gran Metro’.
A few years later, the signage was unified to indicate ‘G Metro’ at both entrances and would remain unchanged until 1969. The unification of the name means the original signs were not kept, which is why TMB has opted to produce replicas of them using the plans from the original design. This means the station again has the signs of ‘Liceu’ and ‘Gran Metro’, regaining the appearance from a hundred years ago.
