Barcelona City Council has given final approval to a project to remodel the Parc del Turó de la Peira. The work is being promoted by the Neighbourhood Plan and has a budget of 4,323,734 euros. Definitive approval will be given in the coming weeks and the tendering process launched, with work expected to get under way in the second half of 2025.

Better access

Accessibility at the Parc del Turó de la Peira is currently limited, but the remodelling process will do away with the steepest slopes. The project aims to generate some intersecting and circular routes that allow users to cross the park without any steps, from C/ Beret to Pg. Fabra i Puig, or to follow a circular route from the lower section (closest to the residential area) without any steps. This means the paths in the park will be as follows, all accessible and with no changes to routes:

  • Cross the northern section of the park
  • Cross the southern section of the park
  • Round trip
  • Path around viewing points

As the routes across the northern section of the park and the round trip are in very good condition, work here will only entail some occasional repairs and improvements in signage. As for the route across the southern section of the park, the work here should introduce some handrails to paths to improve their accessibility. Finally, at the route around the viewing point the work will renew the picnic areas and green up this space.

Main measures

The work will also create two dog recreation areas in the lower sections of the park, of 280 and 700 square metres respectively, fostering more respectful use between users in this part of the park. An auditorium will be created in the old quarry section where the current dog area is located.

The part of the park known as the “peaceful area” will be greened up, with its exstign elements repaired and its biodiversity improved.

The revamp to the Parc del Turó de la Peira also includes the installation of new furniture: litter bins, benches, water springs and picnic tables. The lighting system will also be renewed.

A sports area of roughly 1,000 square metres will also be created in the area around the Institut Josep Pla, including calisthenics elements and a volleyball court. A grandstand will also be installed here, along with fencing and apparatus. Some table-tennis tables will also be installed around the park.

Children’s play areas will also be enlarged and be better organised, made more attractive with various elements such as inclusive games and slides that make the most of the changes in levels between sections in the park.

Finally, when it comes to greenery, the singularity of the project lies in the fact that it respects existing greenery and at the same time promotes spaces where greenery can grow in places currently asphalted. Similarly, more vegetation will be planted in the areas around the future play areas, dog recreation areas and the auditorium, with some trees in the area by C/ Beret also to be replaced.

New dynamics and new uses

The revamp to the Parc del Turó de la Peira is the result of a participatory process carried out with local residents. The process included urban changes and also addressed the need to establish new dynamics and uses to improve mutual respect between users in the park, the overall goal being to turn it in to a quality public space.

Nearly 230 local people and organisations took part in the process, which included actions such as outings in the park, discovery walks, participatory debates and sessions at local schools.

In parallel to the revamp of the park, work is under way on a cultural and leisure programme aimed at families, the idea being to facilitate these new uses and promote positive dynamics and respect towards others. The transformation of the park will also offer a chance to further develop aspects linked to popular memory, the environmental value of the park and improvements to the minor roads around it that connect with the neighbourhoods.
