Barcelona Fire Service awards its ‘genoveves’ and medals of merit for 2023

This annual ceremony pays homage to the careers of firefighters and some outstanding acts by them in the last year. The Saló de Cent chamber at the City Hall hosted the ceremony this morning to mark the day of the corps’ patron saint, Sant Joan de Déu, which falls on 8 March.

The first awards were the traditional genoveves, which are scale model replicas of one of the most iconic vehicles ever used by the corps. These went to thirteen firefighters who retired in 2022, in gratitude for their devotion and contribution to making Barcelona a safer and more liveable place.

The following distinctions were also awarded:

  • Two bronze medals of honour for devotion to service.
  • Two silver medals for 35 years of service with the corps.
  • An honorary plaque for the director general of the Civil Protection and Emergencies service with the Ministry of the Interior, Leonardo Marcos.
  • Five silver diplomas for the Industrial Engineers’ Association of Catalonia, the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, the board of the Technical Industrial Engineers’ Association of Catalonia, the board of the Quantity Surveyors, Technical Architects and Building Engineers’ Association of Catalonia and the Directorate General for Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue with the Government of Catalonia.

Together with the Mayor, Ada Colau, the ceremony was attended by the head of the Barcelona Fire Service, Sebastià Massagué, the head of the City Police, Pedro Velázquez, the manager of Safety and Prevention, Maite Casado, and other institutional representatives.

Official ceremonies for this year continue on Wednesday, 8 March, with wreath laying and the ceremony to award distinctions at the Espai Bombers.
