Housing and facilities in the former Hotel Buenos Aires

The former Hotel Buenos Aires in the district of Sarrià – Sant Gervasis is to be expropriated and used for facilities and housing with services. The project responds to a long-standing demand by local people and will protect a unique building which is an icon for the neighbourhood of Vallvidrera, el Tibidabo i les Planes.

The plan is to preserve the existing building and construct another one on the same site. Between them they will be used for 37 protected homes at affordable prices for vulnerable groups, particularly young people and the elderly, in a neighbourhood where there is a lack of publicly owned flats for rent.

The ground floor of the historical building will also be used for neighbourhood facilities, to be agreed on with local people and organisations.

The expropriation requires an investment of 3.5 million euros.

Iconic architecture

The former Hotel Buenos Aires dates back to 1885. Originally an inn, it was turned into a hotel in 1909 after a renovation project by Jeroni Granell gave it the image it maintains today.

The original finishes are practically intact today, with ceramic glaze on ceilings and wall panelling, balconies with coloured stained-glass, ornamental mosaic floors and stained-glass and forged iron lights.

The new plan will protect and maintain the building’s uniqueness.
