La Llavor, the first centre exclusively for homeless women

La Llavor is the first residential inclusion centre of its kind in the city. The forty-bedroom building is run by Sant Joan de Déu Social Services, with collaboration from the Fundació Ared. The new facility forms part of the municipal network and provides continuity for one of the special accommodation facilities set up in response to the Covid-19 health crisis.

Women account for 13% of the city’s homeless, and yet the poverty rate and the risk of social exclusion is greater among women than men. This is because women suffer more situations of poor housing, abuse and violence before they become homeless, and when they reach the centre their physical and emotional condition is worse than among men.

The new residential inclusion centre is designed for single adult women in situations of social and residential exclusion, with no income or insufficient income to be able to access accommodation independently.

La Llavor has got forty individual rooms, with communal areas such as a launderette and a dining room. The goal of the centre is to offer a residential option until the women find a more stable alternative which suits their situation.

The centre is located at C/ Saldes, 6-8, in the district of Horta-Guinardó, and forms part of the City Council’s public network. A budget of 1.16 million euros is due to be earmarked to ensure its functioning and help with the women’s personal, social and labour inclusion from a gender perspective.

This is the first facility of this type in the city, inspired by the government measure on the prevention of homelessness and the introduction of the gender perspective in the care provided for homeless people in Barcelona.
