Resources for carers to be doubledThe budget for the ‘Respir Plus’ initiative is to be doubled. The programme provides temporary stays for highly-dependent people, allowing their carers to take care of their own personal needs, including rest and health.
The move may benefit around 500 families living with and caring for people over 65 who need help and support with basic activities. The extension to the programme means holiday cover will be available every month of the year, giving carers more autonomy to handle other matters besides holidays.
By increasing the budget from 300,000 euros to 600,000 euros the City Council is seeking to address the lack of resources for dependent people and families who look after them. The most common carer profile is a woman between the ages of 55 and 76, devoting practically all her time to looking after a dependent family member.
