The goal of the competition, promoted by the Fundació BIT Habitat, is to use data analysis and visualisation to highlight the challenges for smart cities and for these visualisations to be of use in drafting better public policies.

The subject for this year’s edition was the sustainable development goals (SDG) set out by the UN, tying in with the strategy to promote the 2030 Agenda in Barcelona.

For the competition in Barcelona, the projects which were finalists invited reflection on topics such as housing, domestic violence, mobility, the concept of the multi-service city and noise pollution.

In the parallel competition by the city of Kobe, the prize went to Visualizing City Parks, presented by Junki Tougo, Yume Iwamoto and Noriaki Sekihara. The project aims to use open data to provide more real-time information on activities which people can do in parks and encourage them to go to parks more often.
