Nearly 350,000 people over the age of 65 live in Barcelona, a figure which is expected to rise to 420,000 people by 2038, representing 25.5% of the city’s population. The increase in demand for social services for elderly people means research is needed to find innovative solutions and complementary or alternative models which adapt to an ageing population.

This is what is being proposed by the i.lab, the urban, social and sustainable innovation laboratory which periodically launches new searches for solutions to the city’s challenges through technology and on this occasion is focusing on the ageing of the population. The lab is inviting the entrepreneurial community and innovative organisations to put forward their proposals by asking the question ‘How can with provide effective care for dependent senior citizens as part of the Social Superblocks?

Key dates for the challenge:

  • Project submission period: 26 September 2019
  • Five finalists announced: 15 October 2019
  • Winning Project announced: November 2019, as part of the Smart City Expo de Barcelona.

The requisites for the challenge state that participating groups should put forward projects which have been tested and/or methodologies proven to generate social cohesion (for instance, projects which activate the community to provide support for elderly people). They should also offer technological and/or robotic solutions making for more effective detection of the needs of the elderly, better provision of services and shorter response times.

The winning project will get 20,000 euros to implement their solution via a pilot scheme.
