Concilia, the new municipal childminding service to help with work-life balance

The new Concilia programme provides six municipal childminding facilities for single-mother families with limited incomes, victims of gender violence and with no community support network. The childminding spaces operate seven days a week, with eighteen educators having been contracted to provide service.

Concilia is under way as a pilot scheme and will run from October to February in various neighbourhoods forming part of the Neighbourhood Plan:

  • La Verneda i la Pau, at the Casal de Barri La Pau
  • El Besòs i el Maresme, at the Casal de Barri Besòs
  • La Trinitat Vella, at the Camp de Futbol Municipal Trinitat Vella
  • El Raval, at the Espai Erasme Janer
  • La Marina, at the Sala Pepita Casanellas
  • Zona Nord, at the Centre Cívic Zona Nord

The municipal childminding service has the capacity to care for eight children per hour at each centre and is operative every day of the week outside school hours, during weekday afternoons and mornings and afternoons at weekends.

The six facilities use a registration system whereby users reserve places 48 hours in advance on the website concilia.incoop.cat. There are also some hours set aside for families who can’t register online.

The facilities are expected to cater for between 1,200 and 1,500 children between the ages of 4 and 12, mainly for single-mother families with no income and no support network. The intention is for these children to have access to quality free time, with educational activities adapted to different ages and based around the values of joint education, participation, environmental education, interculturality, emotional education and art.

The initiative has a budget of 248,500 euros and forms part of the municipal shock social plan to tackle the socio-economic effects generated by Covid-19. It has been adapted to the current health situation, with measures such as trying to conduct most activities outdoors, the use of face masks, frequent handwashing and the use of toys and materials which are easy to disinfect.
