School meal grants are support tools for vulnerable groups and ensure that children and young people make a quality meal every day and enjoy school meal times. To cover any possible unexpected cases, once the June and September periods end a new application period will be established.

For the 2020-2021 school year ordinary school meal grants will increase to 70% of the maximum daily amount of the grant while the extra aid will rise to 100%, a total of 6.33 euros a day. All students under the Plan against Segregation will benefit from this extra aid.

This year will also see an increase in the income threshold for eligibility in receiving school meal grants, so that more families will be able to benefit from it.

Online procedures due to the COVID-19 health crisis

Requests this year can be processed through the Barcelona Education Consortium’s website as a preventive measure against COVID-19. To receive guidance for the application process, families are advised to call the following telephone helplines: 667 386 863 and 638 684 531. Appointments can also be booked in advance at the Education Consortium’s offices.

Data from the 2019-2020 school year

80% of applications submitted during the 2019-2020 school year were accepted, representing a total of 31,969. 73.5% of the grants were awareded to students enrolled at state schools, and 26.5% to students at state-assisted schools.

Given the state of emergency and the exceptional situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, students benefiting from the school meal grants continued to receive grants during the third term through money cards worth 4 euros a day, so they could buy food at the city’s establishments.
