Community centres keep going

Despite closing to the public on 13 March, the city’s community centres are still operating via social media and offering all sorts of activities: for children, for people to develop hobbies and interests, get some physical exercise, see shows, do cookery or listen to concerts.

Music

Not only are centres offering repeats of concerts at their facilities using Facebook and Twitter, but they’re also recommending online concerts at major venues in the world and encouraging people to take part in shared lists on Spotify.

Photography

The centres are also organising participatory photo-sharing initiatives during the confinement period for people to share new images of what life is like for them at present or to rediscover old pictures of their families or neighbourhoods.

Additional workshops and programmes

Guided activities continue at most centres via social media. Examples include yoga workshops, all styles of dance, cookery, classes in IT, drawing and painting, as well as regular or occasional activities such as theatre, storytelling, dance and exhibitions.

At the same time, new activities are being organised. These are specifically intended for the days at home, such as cycles to repeat talks given at facilities, dissemination activities and newly created courses.

Family activities

Children also have their own space at community centres, with art and crafts, storytelling and a wide variety of other activities.
