Green light to consolidate terraces gained on road surfaces during the pandemic

Initial approval for the amendment to the by-law on terraces, which will permanently consolidate the space gained on road surfaces during the Covid-19 pandemic for use by bars and restaurants. The regulation will enable this space to be used by local people, cut the presence of private vehicles, facilitate mobility for pedestrians and provide support for a restaurant sector hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis.

Terraces on road surfaces will need to use one of the seven authorised platform designs trialled during the summer to ensure accessibility, visibility, the circulation of services and access to facilities and car parks.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,588 new permits have been issued for new terraces occupying parking spaces, traffic lanes and chamfered street corners, which can now become definitive with structures offering aesthetic quality and which fit in with the urban landscape, doing away with provisional elements.

The change to the by-law on terraces will be debated by the Full Council before it comes into force next year. The validity of exceptional permits, which expire on the last day of the year, will be extended until June 2022 so that the authorised platforms can be acquired and erected in that time.
