Over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year, 358 schools have formed part of the Escoles + Sostenibles programme by developing their own projects to improve sustainability in and around schools, with students and teaching staff taking part directly. Examples of some of the projects include:

  • Ecological cultivation areas
  • Compost systems
  • Proposals for more sustainable mobility
  • Proposals for good air quality and noise levels
  • Ideas for responsable consumption
  • Water and energy savings systems

The guide for the ‘Passem a l’acció’ programme is a practical document to help each school define and develop sustainability, particularly for centres which have recently joined the programme.

The Escoles + Sostenibles programme started life in 2001 as part of the Citizen Commitment to the Sustainability of Barcelona. The goal was to contribute to sustainability through education, recognising schools as agents for change in the city. Over its twenty-year history, over 500 schools have taken part in promoting sustainability from the classroom.
