The project to improve the rail connection with the port moves forward

The new supramunicipal infrastructure will follow the former riverbank of the Llobregat river and have a multi-modal transport terminal, a freight arrival and despatch terminal and another for loading and unloading. An arrival and despatch terminal will also be located parallel to the current course of the river.

The presentation of the project coincides with the launch of a three-month participatory process, where local people and organisations will be able to give their input for any changes to the final document. The final project approval by the Catalan Commission for Territory should follow in the first quarter of 2023.

New logistics terminal

Once the project is finished, the port will have a rail hub with six terminals providing service to the port area and the Zona Franca, the Pratenc industrial estate and the industries located in the Baix Llobregat area and to the south of Barcelona.

The expansion of the rail network in the area to the south of the port continues the strategy of diversifying the connection to improve the efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness of the port, opting for an intermodal model.

Rail traffic helped get 175,000 lorries off the roads in 2020, some 700 a day, representing a saving of 42,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 14 million litres of fuel.

More green spaces

The project also includes the creation of 20.8 hectares of green public space in the area where the new infrastructures are being built, as well as the Corredor Verd Parc Agrari del Llobregat – Parc de Montjuïc, a network of green routes connecting the different logistics areas of the port and natural spaces.
