Towards more sustainable tourism with more social return

The Barcelona Tourism Consortium is to roll out two new municipal strategies to improve management and good practice among tourism companies and services in the city. The consortium has been tasked with managing the strategies by Barcelona City Council, with a budget allocation of 258,000 euros through until 2022.

The commission encompasses two main areas of municipal action on tourism.

Firstly, the Tourism Marketing Strategy for Destination Barcelona (EMTDB) sets out goals on sustainability, competitiveness, optimum social return, integrated management from the point of view of the territory and the product, and inter-connections with strategic economic sectors.

Secondly, the Sustainable Tourism Biosphere Commitment looks to spread a series of good practices in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability among the city’s network of tourism businesses and services. This will be supported and overseen in collaboration with the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

Companies participating will get a seal accrediting their commitment to sustainability, which can be renewed annually.

The move also provides a boost for this new era with Turisme de Barcelona, in line with the evolution of Barcelona and the trend among major European cities to switch from promoting tourism to managing it.
