Watch the peregrine falcons of the Sagrada Família hatch live

At the moment, the female peregrine falcon is incubating the eggs she began laying in early March. The chicks are expected to hatch in early April. Protecting this nest at the Sagrada Família is part of a project to reintroduce the species to the city.

In 2003, a pair of adult peregrine falcons took up residence in one of the Sagrada Família’s towers as part of a reintroduction project led by Barcelona City Council and Thalassia Estudis Ambientals, which began in 1999.

The basilica was chosen as one of the ideal sites for this initiative, as it was one of the last refuges where this species bred in Barcelona before disappearing. When spring is just around the corner, falcons have been coming to nest at the Sagrada Família for over twenty years now.

A webcam has been installed in the nest so that people can follow the falcons’ breeding season, which is usually between March and April.

This year, the female peregrine falcon laid her first egg on 2 March. The incubation period lasts between 29 and 32 days, so the chicks are expected to hatch between 5 and 9 April.

We invite you to follow the whole process live!
