Weekend: Fair trade festival, Calidoscopi Cultural and the Sagrada Família local festival

The first weekend in May offers all sorts of things to do. Here are some suggestions: Saturday 4 May, the main event for World Fair Trade and Ethical Finance Day at Mercat de Sant Antoni; Calidoscope Cultural, a festival in Sant Andreu over the whole weekend for people to engage with citizen science, and the local festival in the Sagrada Família, filling the neighbourhood with popular culture.

The main event for World Fair Trade and Ethical Finance Day is being held in Mercat de Sant Antoni on Saturday 4 May. This year’s event focuses on gender equality and women’s empowerment. There’s a communal breakfast with fair trade products from 10 am to 12 noon, as well as the show and discussion entitled Quin futur tenen els Rossell?, organised by the association La Xixa Teatre.

A manifesto will be read out at midday and an itinerant trade fair caravan presented. From 12.30 pm there will be drinks and appetisers to the sound of feminist music by PD Antònia Found System. A workshop will also be running from 10 am to 2 pm for people to make their own purple filter (a central theme for the day, with a slogan inviting people to see things in purple) and there’s also a chance to take part in a photo call, children’s games and visit an exhibition. See the full programme here.

Sant Andreu’s identity in sound

Calidoscopi Cultural 2019 is being organised by the district office from 2 to 31 May. The festival explores the link between science and the local area through forty different activities. This year’s edition aims to bring citizen science closer to people, develop a sound map of the district and describe its identity in terms of sound.

Data gathering itineraries and participatory workshops are being organised this month, as well as dialogues, street experiments exhibitions, film forums and concerts at community centres and other local centres and organisations. On Friday the community centres in Sant Andreu, Bon Pastor and Navas will be holding workshops on sounds in the neighbourhood and plants which give people hay fever. See the activities planned here.

Local festival in Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família neighbourhood is celebrating this weekend with an agenda packed with activities. On Friday evening there’s a multicultural workshop and concerts in the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site and in the crypt of the Sagrada Família, while Saturday brings the Commerce, Crafts and Entities Fair, a risotto contest, salsa dancing and a festival meal with dancing. On Sunday there’s a middle-distance run with the Sagrada Família Mile, as well as an awareness activity on violence against women. See the programme here.
