Countdown to the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup, the most important international sailing competition in the world, gets under way in Barcelona on 22 August 2024. The event is regarded as the sports event which has the third biggest impact on an area, behind the Olympic Games and the World Cup. After the official opening, Barcelona will also be hosting the final preliminary round in the Challenger Selection Series, which leads to the America’s Cup Match in October 2024. In 2023 and early in 2024 there is also the possibility of organising up to three preliminary events. In the summer of 2023, all teams will have established their bases and will be training in Barcelona.

In addition, this is the first time in the event’s 171-year history that an America’s Cup for women will be held. The epicentre for the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup will be the Olympic Port, which is being remodelled to accommodate the teams. The port is also gearing up for the Hydrogen project for hydrogen-powered hydrofoils, such as the Chase One by the Emirates Team New Zealand, a real example of sustainability for the maritime industry on a world scale and a contribution to Barcelona’s blue economy.

For local and international enthusiasts, the America’s Cup Experience is being planned as a space offering information and experiences on all things relating to the America’s Cup. This includes its history, the teams, science and innovation, children’s areas and the chance to experience the excitement of the regattas in the America’s Cup with interactive simulators and the special IMAX experience of being on board an AC75 with teams competing on a screen of 600 square metres.

As the host of the America’s Cup, Barcelona cements its position as a global leader in the nautical and blue economy from the perspective of sport, sustainability, innovation and education. Because of this, a programme of projects is being prepared which will transcend the competitions and lay the foundation of a more immediate future, for instance with the improvements to infrastructures at the port.

The host administrations (Ministry for Culture and Sport, Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Port de Barcelona, Barcelona Tourism Consortium, Barcelona Provincial Council, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and Barcelona Global Association) are all part of the Barcelona Nautical Capital Foundation (FBCN), the organisation to locally facilitate the development of the event, as well as the subsequent projects for the country and the city.
