The new market broadens the range of commerce offered here and features fifteen fresh food stalls and a bar in the central building, plus seven non-food stalls in the annexe building.

The new market is distributed across two floors:

  • Ground floor, of 1,240 square metres, including the sales space for fresh produce.
  • Basement, of 1,218 square metres, with market logistics spaces for storerooms and cold chambers, a waste area connecting with the ground floor and other facilities.

The second building, housing the sales premises, features a sales gallery and the administration section of the market. Located beneath the arches in Plaça del Mercadal, this building is distributed as follows:

  • Ground floor, of 370 square metres, with seven stalls selling non-food products.
  • Floors 1 and 2, of 140 square metres each: the first floor includes offices, a meeting room and a kitchen classroom, while the second houses a multi-purpose function room.

Energy efficient and sustainable

The new building is an energy efficient and sustainable building, designed taking into account energy saving measures and conceived to make the most of natural light entering through transparent façades and rooftop openings, and prioritising natural ventilation with motorised windows.

The building also reduces the energy loss of an air-conditioned environment with curtains of air, renewable energies to heat water, solar tanks on the rooftop and alternative heat recovery systems for the refrigeration and waste chambers. It also uses smart control systems to optimise energy according to the demand at any given time.

As with all municipal markets, the building’s energy comes from renewable sources. The roof of the market includes solar glass to bring in natural light and electric energy for self-consumption.

The revamp to the market entailed an overall investment of 9.5 million euros and also included the reurbanistaion of the square, adding curbless paving to give continuity to the indoor space at the market.

Citizen celebration to inaugurate the market

The neighbourhood wants to celebrate the opening of the new facility and is inviting all local people to a celebration on Saturday, 17 September, from 11 am to 2 pm. The event includes music, entertainment and tastings of local produce and homemade products offered by the stallholders at the market.
