What is it?

It is an obligatory notification that must be made to the social security system when a work activity is to begin, either as an employee or as a self-employed individual.

  • In the case of self-employed individuals, they themselves are directly responsible for applying for registration in the special scheme for the self-employed (RETA).
  • In the case of employees, it is the employer that is responsible for registering the worker in the general social security system.

Only the procedure for registering with the social security system for self-employed individuals is explained below.

Important information

Social security is a public system of protection against situations of illness, disability, unemployment, old age, accidents at work, maternity or loss of the family's means of support.

The validity of the registration with the social security system is the same as the duration of the work activity.

In Barcelona there is a company care office (OAE) that will give you detailed information free of charge and will help you with all these formalities.

Why is this formality important?

This is a compulsory formality for anyone wishing to carry on a professional activity. Before the starting the activity, the individual must register with the social security system in order to contribute to the system. In return, you will receive extensive benefits, such as public benefits in the event of illness or unemployment, payments in retirement, etc.

You can also consult the Social Security website (available in English, French, Catalan, Spanish and other co-official languages of the Spanish state).

Who does it apply to?

It applies to all citizens who wish to start a professional activity, whether as employees or as self-employed individuals.

  • The individual himself or herself, if self-employed.
  • The employer, in the case of employees.

If you are self-employed, you must register with the social security system:

  • In person, at the Provincial Directorate of the General Treasury of the Social Security System or its offices.
  • Electronically over the website, if you have a digital certificate.

If you are an employee, it is the employer that is responsible for your registration with the social security system.

Only the procedure for registering with the social security system on the special scheme for self-employed individuals is explained below.

Once you have obtained the digital certificate and the social security number, access the Social Security website.

Select the option "Citizen > Registration > Registration in the special scheme for self-employed persons" to start the application.

You must obtain and fill in the application form (TA.0521). There are different versions of the form depending on your profile as a self-employed worker..

The different screens will allow you to select and fill in the details, which will depend on the options you choose. To complete the request, the details entered will be shown so that you can confirm them.

If the information entered in the application is correct, after pressing "Confirm" the message "Operation carried out correctly" will appear, and the option will be given to see the certificate of registration in PDF format.

Once you have registered with the social security system, if necessary, you can apply for the identity card for foreign nationals (TIE) (if a non-EU citizen) or the certificate of registration as an EU national.

These documents provide evidence of the fact that a foreign is in Spain legally. In addition, the identity card for foreign nationals (TIE) serves to identify the person and to prove that they have authorisation to remain in Spanish territory for a period of more than six months.
