It will not be necessary for you to obtain a residence permit in Spain beforehand if:

  • You are a citizen of the EU/EEA (plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland. If you want to live here, you will need to apply for a certificate from the register of European Union citizens.
  • You are the spouse of a citizen of the EU/EEA or Switzerland, even if you are not a citizen of one of those countries, and you are with or join that person in Spain. If you want to live here, you will have to apply for an EU family residence card.

Important information

Formalities tend to change fairly frequently. That is why it is only the regulations in force that apply when you carry out the formality in question.
