They say that a party without music isn’t a party. Perhaps it is music that makes people move and be moved in moments of celebration. During Barcelona’s festes majors, or main annual festivals, the city’s Municipal Band presents a programme steeped in festive traditions: a Galician composer, Ricardo Dorado, who writes about music from Alicante; a composer from Alicante, J. Vicent Egea, who writes about music from Pamplona; and several Catalan composers, such as Eduard Toldrà, Manuel Oltra, Ricard Viladesau, Enric Morera and Pep Ventura, who evoke landscapes, festivals and dances through sounds that blend cobla (sardana orchestra) and concert band. We are commemorating anniversaries for each of them and wish to pay tribute. Their sounds embody the spirit of a city that embraces music when it comes time to celebrate.
