Baobab Orchestra (Dakar; Afro-Cuban music): Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng

This is one of the world's most iconic African orchestras, and one of the oldest too, despite having taken a fifteen-year break in its activities. Formed in 1970, it blended Afro-Cuban rhythms, melodies sung in Portuguese Creole and Congolese rumba, an explosive combination that quickly make it famous. The period of inactivity between the 1980s and 1990s ended in a new era in the group’s life, having recovered from the interest its music had awakened at the start of the 21st century. Today it remains an extremely popular dance-music group with a great capacity for connecting with the public. Its performances are an intensive journey through the band’s history, which is also that of half a century of Senegalese music.
