Bell ringing and the parade of the Mercè entourage
The bells of the Gòtic neighbourhood are set to chime again on 24 September, thanks to the Associació d’Amics i Amigues del Campanar del Pi, an organisation working to regain the vocation of the bellringer and manual bell ringing. On this occasion we’ll hear the bells of the Basílica de la Mercè, in the old style and in the Catalan style. This means ringing them and putting them to “sit”, downwards but without them swinging a complete circle.
In the meantime, all of the elements in the popular festival entourage known as the Seguici Popular will be performing their dances at the same time in front of the temple. After this, they will be setting off on the Seguici de la Mercè, with the Barcelona Municipal Band and the Seguici Popular, headed by the figures of the Capgrossos Macers, followed by the City Giants, the Cavallets Cotoners de Barcelona, the City Eagle, the Lion, the Mule, the Ox, the Ciutat Vella Dragon, the Wyvern, the Tarasca, the Pi Giants, the Santa Maria del Mar Giants, the Falcons de Barcelona and the stick dancers from the Seguici, all with their respective music groups, coblas or gralla players, dolçaina pipers, cornamuse and flabiol players and percussionists. The Seguici de la Mercè will escort the city’s authorities from Pl. Mercè to Pl. Sant Jaume.
