Founded by the City Council in 1944, as heir to the Pau Casals Orchestra project that was interrupted by the Civil War, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia (OBC) is very much open to the world and to new times, performing key symphonic works. As every year, the orchestra will be at the Mercè with a programme that this year will include Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances Nos. 1 and 8 ; the Waves of the Danube waltz by Ivanovici; Brahms’ Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6; the Habanera and the Seguidilla from Bizet’s Carmen, with mezzo-soprano Laura Vila; L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2, also by Bizet; the Pizzicato Polka by Johann Strauss and the Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s Prince Igor, with Kazushi Ono conducting.
