Vozes and Marta Valero Symphonic Orchestra: Tribute to Mina(Barcelona; symphonic; song)
In 2004, the Venezuelan cellist and director Pablo González Martínez founded a musical association inspired by Venezuela’s National System of Children and Youth Orchestras and Choirs, thanks to which he himself had the opportunity to study music. This musician brought the experience to the Barcelona Nou Barris and Sant Andreu districts and the Besòs neighbourhoods, bringing “Vozes”, a musical and social project through which more than 700 children and adolescents have been able to take part in musical activities to life. They not only have access to musical training, but also to the instruments they need to do so. We have heard the young talent of the Vozes project at Barcelona’s annual festival many a time, but this year they will be accompanied by the singer Marta Valero. The mezzo-soprano, who studied at the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), combines musical and theatrical expression in a particularly versatile repertoire that ranges from Baroque opera to contemporary music, with musical arrangements to genres like jazz and folk between. Valero and the Vozes musicians will be bringing the songs of an iconic talent on the 20th century Mediterranean scene to the main square of Nou Barris: the songs of Mina, a legend of Italian music who, with her unmistakeable voice, created some of the greatest worldwide hits of the 1960s and 1970s. Although she left the stage and the public eye at the end of the 1970s, she is still an essential musical benchmark today. Hence her musical creations will be revived by the voice of Marta Valero, with the support of the Vozes Symphonic Orchestra, in a year when La Mercè is looking towards Rome, the guest city at this year’s annual festival.
