The city of Barcelona celebrated the beatification of Saint Josep Oriol in full splendour between 1806 and 1807. Years later, the Basílica del Pi continued the festivities in honour of its patron saint until they were stopped. In 1995, the Association of Friends of the Gegants del Pi decided to launch a project to reclaim the festivities with the El Pi neighbourhood’s associations, local residents and retailers. This is the model which, for all its changes and extensions, remains in use today.
