"Homenatge a Xavi Turull” concert, as part of "La Mercè és Música"

Various artists: Homenatge a Xavi Turull (Catalonia; fusion)

2020 began with bad news: the death of Xavi Turull due to cancer, a Barcelona musician, percussion specialist, who knew a multitude of rhythms of the world, from flamenco and Mediterranean music to Latin sounds, passing through the music of India. He was a decisive musician in understanding what was called sonido Barcelona (Barcelona sound) in the first decade of the 21st century. He was one of the first professional percussionists in Catalonia and the first Catalan to tour the main cities of China in the 1980s. He spent all his life shuttling between Havana and Barcelona. He worked tirelessly with a load of artists and groups, from Rosario Flores to Estopa, from Ketama to Manolo García... He made a dream come true with his group Ojos de Brujo: to breathe life into a creative and combative formation, with a repertoire full of rhythm, which achieved international recognition during the first half of the 21st century (a Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album, a BBC award for best live band, the Best Tour Award from the Catalan Music Academy). Friends and musicians who have worked on projects with Xavier Turull pay tribute to him in a concert where we can listen to musicians from projects such as Ojos de Brujo, La Pegatina, Txarango, Joan Garriga, Lenacay, La Nave Bruja, Amalgama and Maruja Limón. A special day to remember an essential musician who laid the foundations of the Barcelona sound.
