La Tabalada

Before any fire run, wherever it takes place (and there are plenty across Catalonia), there has to be… a tabalada. As you might guess, tabalada comes from tabal, a percussion instrument which, when played by many at once, can easily make you wonder whether you should be wearing earplugs. The Tabalada of La Mercè brings together all the percussion groups from the devil troupes (both children’s and adult groups), as well as the dragons and fire beasts. You’ll see them (and hear them!) near the starting point of the fire run. And if they travelled by metro, you may even have had the surprise of a concert in your carriage on the way!
