Nadah El Shazly (Egypt)

Title Ahwar (2017), Nadah El Shazly's debut album, means 'marsh', but the Egyptian singer and producer explained that, as it was easy to lose yourself in swampy landscapes if you're not used to them, the album’s name also refers to a labyrinth. El Shazly does not lose herself in the abstract landscapes she sketches the map of these marshes with: her hybrid of traditional Egyptian songs and avant-garde blend of jazz, R&B and electronic has the clearest north and has put this artist, who was introduced making Misfits covers, in a Cairo underground vantage point. Recorded in the Egyptian capital and Montreal, in collaboration with the North Africans Sam Shalabi and Maurice Louca and the cream of Canada’s contemporary classical and impro music scene, the Arab Spring continues to flourish on Ahwar.
