Himno vertical
Experimental flamenco - Andalusia
Rocío Márquez embodies the most innovative side of flamenco cante or singing. This extraordinary vocal artist from Huelva, with a musical trajectory spanning more than thirty years, got her start in traditional cante, winning the Lámpara Minera at the 2008 Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas before embarking on a series of carefully crafted artistic experiments that proved to be a success. After fusing flamenco with electronic music, she’s now combining her voice with Pedro Rojas Ogáyar’s classical and electric guitars. The album is called Himno vertical [Vertical Anthem]. A reference to Poesia vertical [Vertical Poetry] by Argentine poet Roberto Juarroz, it straddles the intersection of flamenco, classical sounds and the realm of experimentation.
In this show, Rocío reflects on the concept of authorship in the arts, exploring the origins of creative inspiration through body and voice.
You’ll hear fandangos, tangos, verdiales, soleares, seguidillas, malagueñas and bulerías, some with the artist’s own lyrics and others based on poems by Shakespeare, Juan del Encina and Friedrich von Schiller.
For all audiences.
