“Seun Kuti & Egypt 80” concert, part of "Mercè Music; African Night"

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Nigeria; Afrobeat)

The son of a legend in African music, the young Seun Kuti had been asking his father for the chance to sing with him since he was nine years old. And he finally succeeded shortly before Fela Kuti's untimely death in 1997. Few believed it would fall to him to fill the void left by his father, the lead-singer of the group Egypt 80. But he did while staying true to the social and political slogans of a committed artist who mixed Yoruba sounds with jazz and funk. Seun Kuti has continued to delve into African music traditions and bring them up to date, to relate the struggles faced by his continent on his albums. And he's doing all that with his father’s old group, producing works such as Black Times, which was released this year (2018).
