The Mexican state of Veracruz, where Son de Madera’s musicians come from, is also the heartland of son jarocho, the traditional genre that they’re renewing through a special playfulness and experimentation. The musicians playing alongside Ramón Gutiérrez Hernández, leader of the band founded in 1992 in the city of Xalapa, offer audiences an experience that is both musical and poetic in a space for exploration geared towards new generations. Their pieces re-create the elements that make up fandango: singing and music, poetry and improvisation. The artists have been able to bring back the least commercial side of son jarocho to place it in dialogue with the past and future and open up new doors for the genre.

Don’t leave when the concert is over because right at the foot of the stage, it will be time for a fandango in true jarocho, Veracruz style. This is a party that takes place around a platform, with the dancer creating rhythms by tapping the heels of their shoes as if they were a musical instrument.
