Historian
Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zaragoza and visiting professor at the Central European University of Vienna. In 2018 and 2019, he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and in the 2022–2023 academic year, a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan.
He is one of Spain’s leading 20th-century historians, internationally recognised for his studies on the Spanish Civil War. His many books have been published in Spanish and English, with some translated into Arabic and Turkish. In April 2021, the Government of Aragón awarded him the Aragonese Letters Prize. His latest book is Franco (Crítica, 2025). He was the historical advisor for Alejandro Amenábar’s film While at War (2019) and has supervised 36 doctoral theses.
