Fostering of bicycles

Mobilitat en bicicleta

Participation

The bicycle strategy aims to foster the use of public and private bikes. For this reason, promotional and educational programmes are planned for the city, with the backing, involvement and participation of all the players concerned.

Promoting the use of bikes in Barcelona originated with the Bicycle Working Group discussions, as part of the Mobility Pact. Work and development will continue along these lines.

Therefore it will be the organisations involved in the Pact that will monitor the development of the planned initiatives and foster joint work on promotion and awareness-raising, which will be carried out on the basis of joint responsibility and in coordination with all the players concerned.

Further information

Promotion

What are they like?

An electric bike is a pedal-assisted bike which, with the inertia of pedalling, reduces the effort involved in cycling. This is the big difference between e-bikes and mopeds, or purely electric devices, and it is what places it in the bicycle category.

It is a mobility solution for tackling hilly terrain without effort and for people with difficulties.

Supramunicipal subsidies

Electric bikes are currently subsidised by the PIVE Plan, run by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) through an agreement with the association of bicycle-related companies.

Municipal project to increase bicycle use

Given the city's topography, there is a project for specifically promoting the use of electric bikes in areas with steeper climbs and for longer journeys, which will enable the area of Barcelona that is accessible by bike to be extended to more users.

The City Council wants to widen goods deliveries in the city by bike or e-bike, along the lines of the trial carried out in Ciutat Vella using electric tricycles.

The local authority favours introducing a network of micro-distribution platforms in the city in which cargo-bikes play a key role.

Promoting this means of transport will entail an increased demand for bikes, which will lead to a whole series of economic activities developing around the sector, including the sale, hire and repairing of bicycles, safety systems for cyclists, anti-theft systems, connectivity systems, recycling, converting bicycles into electric bikes, manufacturing and distributing parts and accessories, insurance, and micro-logistics companies.

Education

Microxarxa escolar "Transformem la mobilitat"

The municipal programme d' Escoles + Sostenibles promotes this micro-network to offer a set of thematic resources organised around a specific support service for schools. Specifically, this project is an initiative to promote sustainable mobility, improve the safety of the spaces where pupils walk, find out about travel patterns, collect incidents on public roads, participate in a collective proposal and draw up a mobility action plan for the school.

BICIA'T

The BICIA’T or "On your bike" project promotes the use of bicycles among council workers as a sustainable and healthy way of getting to work. Initiatives are already under way for constructing non-folding bike parking places at municipal buildings. This is part of the More Sustainable City Council initiative and the idea is that it should serve as a model to be adopted in other structures.

The bicycle as an environmental-education tool

The Barcelona's More Sustainable Facilities has 17 facilities dedicated to extending the culture of sustainability with a stable programme of activities. Among these facilities is the Bicihub, an environmental facility dedicated to promoting the use of bicycles and encouraging sustainable mobility.
