Barcelona's metro and bus networks are certified as Covid-19 safe spaces

Mobility and transport. The certificate is the result of an audit that analysed a range of measures, from the organisation and physical (hygienic, technical and equipment), to employment and those specific to the transport sector adapted by TMB.

The safe-space stamp for Transports de TMB confirms the constant work started since even before the declaration of the state of alert, this last March, when the Covid-19 Coordination Committee was set up. It has therefore been possible to keep public transport in operation at all times and to offer it as a safe and sustainable option for mobility.

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has received the seal of approval for safety, for its hygienic and protective procedures to prevent the spread of the virus on its metro and bus networks, as well as in work activities in its facilities.

The certificate is the result of an audit process carried out by Applus Certification over the last few weeks, during which a range of measures were analysed. These included organisational and physical measures (hygienic, technical and equipment) as well as employment measures  and measures specific to the transport sector and adopted by TMB, under the guidelines of the competent bodies. The goal was to eliminate any possible channels for Covid-19 to spread through and to make public transport a safe place.

So, the vehicle-cleaning and disinfection protocol has been verified, strengthened with suitable disinfectant products, and the use of remote customer care channels for most procedures.

For all other procedures, there is physical protection at face-to-face customer care points between TMB staff and users, with queues actively managed.

Users are informed of the need for them to plan their journeys, so they can avoid rush hours and crowded routes. Other notable developments include guaranteed separation between passengers and drivers in buses, as tickets can no longer be purchased on board and are now sold and validated by mobile telephones.

As for internal units, checks were made on the availability of masks, gloves, water and soap or hydro-alcoholic gel and disinfectant products in work places, on compliance with social distancing between members of staff and controlling numbers in internal spaces where a group of people may coincide. In addition, all work areas and vehicles have been signposted with a “large information display” on the guidelines to follow to prevent possible infections.

The official certificate was handed over today by the Applus certification-system manager, Carla Debat, to the Chair of the TMB, Rosa Alarcón, and it will now be incorporated into the labelling of the company’s vehicles and branches over the coming days.
